ABSTRACT

This workshop seeks to unite the Sustainable Design SIG and AFRICA-DESIGN Initiative, emphasizing the importance of integrating diverse cultural, economic, and territorial insights into global sustainable design practices and education. As sustainability becomes increasingly significant, leveraging varied perspectives is key to enhancing design methods. The workshop will benefit from AFRICA-DESIGN's extensive contributions, offering unique sustainable design insights.

 

CONFERENCE PROGRAMME

14:00 – 14:15  Introduction to Workshop objectives +  Sustainable Design SIG & African Design Group​ (15 min)

- A short update on  Sustainable Design SIG 

- A short update on the African Design Initiative 

​-How to be involved in both societies

 

14:15 – 14:35: Introduction to the sustainability challenges and instructions for scenario-based workshop method​ (20 min)

- Overview of some sustainability challenges in relation to product development companies and product design (10 min) 

- Instructions for scenario-based Sustainable Product Development workshop method (10 min)

14:35 – 16:10 Sustainable Design workshop – using backcasting from SPs (1hr 35 min: inclusive of a 20 min break)​

- Introduction to the workshop with video (one product) T-SHIRT (5 min) ​

- Create groups and start with Ice-breaker (5min)​

- TO-BE (build a vision of a sustainable product) IN GROUPS (25 min) ​

- AS-IS (sustainability challenges for all life cycle phases) IN GROUPS (30 min) ​

- Strategies and actions based on backcasting (ALL IN ONE FORUM) (30 min)​

16:10– 17:10  Discussion & Short presentation session ​(1 hr)

- Discussions in relation to differences in the understanding of sustainable design in various contexts ​

17:10– 17:15​ Conclusions (5 min)

- Continued discussions and engagements​
